Ready? Let's get to crafting....... (scroll down just a smidge for the polka dot version) You can also find the complete video tutorial on our YouTube channel: BOO Craft Kit - DIY Halloween Door Hanger.
Classic Black & White Stripe OR Buffalo Plaid
Starting with your circle, load your bristle/chip brush with quite a lot of paint. Paint in a back n' forth motion reloading brush frequently. The technique is to fully cover while also "leaving spots" for the texture to show thru. For a visual of this technique, please see our full instruction video.
Allow the paint to dry completely! before moving onto the next step. You may use a blow dry to "force dry" the paint, just be sure you use it ONLY ON COOL. Steel will grab the heat very fast, it will get HOT and it will interfere with your paint drying. "Stay COOL!" is really important when force drying. :)
Once dry, we are ready to add our stripes or start our buffalo plaid. PLEASE BE SURE YOUR HANGER HOLES ARE AT THE TOP BEFORE YOU START MARKING YOUR LINES (else, you'll have a crooked project) :)
Using a ruler, make seven (7) "stripes". Start by making marks down the circle, using a pencil, at just a bit over 2.5" inches, the actual measurement is 2.8" but just a bit under the 2.5" mark on your ruler will work out perfectly. Once you get to the bottom, your final section/stripe may be just a bit more or a bit less than the others, I promise, it will not matter. Once you have all your marks made, simply use your pencil to draw horizontal lines across the circle.
Using your It's Black paint, starting with the top section, paint in every other "stripe". You should start with a black stripe and end with a black stripe.
If you are doing the classic black and white stripe (first below picture), you may want to fill in each stripe a little more than you do for the buffalo plaid (second picture below). For the buffalo plaid look, it will be important to leave quite a bit of the It's Creamy White base coat showing thru.
Doing the Classic black & white stripe; skip to BOO! & finishing touches below.
Doing the Buffalo Plaid, let's keep goin'..... just one more step.
Once your first set of black stripes are dry, turn your circle and line off your stripes going the other way exactly the same way as you did above. Paint in each stripe, leaving lots of the It's Creamy White base color showing thru but completely fill in each square where the lines intersect as shown below:
Wonderfully Whimsical Polka Dots
Fill in your polka dots using a small detail brush. Since you are painting It's Creamy White over It's Black, you will most likely need at least two coats, remembering to dry the first coat before adding the second.
Now we are ready to paint our BOO! Using the same technique we have been using, lots of paint coverage but leaving the texture spray color showing thru, paint your BOO!
BOO!
Using the same technique of lots of paint coverage while also allowing the texture paint to show through; paint your BOO!
Be sure your BOO! is completely dry. Remember to only use your blow dryer only on cool if force drying :)
Details and Finishing Touches
Let's finish er' up. Regardless of which style you chose to create, all the steps from here on out are exactly the same. We want to add "swish-ies" (Defined as little whips of color around the edge). Using your detail brush, don't use too much paint, simply make little swishes of color around the edge of both your BOO! and your background (Stripes, Plaid or Polka dots). For BOO! we used both It's Black & It's Creamy white paint colors. For the background circle, It's Creamy White, It's Black AND It's Orange.
Let your swish-ies dry and insert your hanger wire. Insert both ends from the back thru the holes with the holes facing you. Pull the wire toward you and wrap it around into a swirl as shown in the pics below.
Grab your BOW from your kit! (WE LOVE BOWS!) Fluff it up by pulling the ribbons in different directions. Stick one end of the pipe cleaner that is securing your bow together thru the hanger whole on either side and give it a twist.
Get your 8 magnets from your kit and double stack them and place each stack of 2 in 4 places (evenly spaced) on the back of your BOO!
Attach BOO! to your background (Stripes, Polka Dots or Buffalo Plaid) and VIOLA!!!! You are done!!!!
